Local electrician delivers for children's hospital

The Queensland Children’s Hospital, located in South Brisbane, is a $1.4 billion project, representing the largest capital investment in children’s health services in Queensland’s history. Logan City Electrical will be part of this groundbreaking project, after successfully winning the contract to supply its electrical services.

The Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) will bring together the history, experience and skills of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Mater Children’s Hospital into one purpose-built facility.

The full program of works for the project includes a 359-bed hospital, energy plant, relocation of the Leukaemia Foundation office accommodation, academic and research facility and the children’s health foundation building refurbishment.

The construction of the QCH is one of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects under way in Australia today, and is managed by the national engineering and construction company Abigroup. Abigroup is responsible for managing the design and construction of the QCH, including managing the 650 sub-contractors that are on site daily, as well as handling other tasks such as procurement.

In 2011 Abigroup seconded an ICN consultant to their Brisbane procurement office that allowed them to have a dedicated consultant that was able to fully integrate into the project. Through this activity, ICN was able to fully understand the projects requirements and propose a number of suitable suppliers.

Through this process, and with the support of ICN in Queensland, local Brisbane firm Logan City Electrical secured a $40 million contract with Abigroup to supply electrical services for the QCH. This has not only helped the company increase its revenue, but has resulted in the creation of new jobs over the life of the project.

Logan City Electrical’s QCH Project Manager, Scott Hogarth says that the contract currently provides employment to 100 company employees, reaching 150 at the peak of the project.Other projects that Logan City Electrical have won with the assistance of ICN include the Gold Coast University Hospital ($32 million), the Robina Hospital expansion ($2 million), The Prince Charles Hospital ($5 million) and the EcoScience Precinct at Boggo Road ($26 million).

As part of ICN’s ongoing support to the Queensland Children’s Hospital, ICN also offered business-matching services for a variety of work packages, including landscaping, tiling and glazing.

With construction having commenced in 2009, the hospital is scheduled to open its doors to patients in late 2014.

At the heart of ICN’s services is ICN Gateway, a powerful online tool helping local suppliers find new business opportunities.
