Century diversifying for success

When Century Engineering, Managing Director, David Heaslip joined the company 13 years ago, he concedes the manufacturer had a narrow and limited market focus. With the help of ICN, the company now has its sights set on national expansion.

‘We could see that to survive and thrive in the tough manufacturing industry we needed to diversify and expand our capabilities’, said David. ‘Century is now breaking new ground in its involvement with cutting-edge projects across key growth industries’.
From its origins in traditional component manufacturing, Century is a diversified company providing general engineering services, water use and water reuse solutions and outsource manufacturing capabilities.
ICN in South Australia has worked closely with Century over the years to assist and capitalise on emerging market opportunities as well as sourcing suppliers.
This has included help with the company’s successful bid to assemble Victor lawn mower engines, the Air Warfare Destroyer project and the Adelaide Desalination plant. ICN is also helping Century with its involvement in a 20 hectare greenhouse project for sustainable horticultural company Sundrop Farms that will produce over 15,000 tonnes of tomatoes a year for metropolitan markets across Australia.
‘Century is a perfect example of a local business that has successfully tapped into the expertise and network connections that ICN offers’, said South Australian ICN General Manager Darren Hill.
‘Over the years, we’ve nominated Century for over 100 different opportunities and helped the company to diversify into different sectors by giving information on projects or contacts. Every member of our team has, at some stage, been involved with Century. It’s been a trusted and succcessul long-standing relationship’, said Darren.
Century’s markets now include power, defence, water, mining and quarrying as well as specialised outsourced manufacturing.
In five years, Century has more than doubled its workforce and now employs 85 people across South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.
Increased capabilities have come from internal investment and bolt-on acquisitions. This included the purchase of Sydney-based water technology and solutions provider Liquitek and most recently that of Priority Engineering Services which further enhanced Century’s automotive, mining and defence expertise.
Century plan to expand further into the oil and gas sector across South Australia and Queensland as well as widen their reach in power and rail.
‘We’ve moved from being a price-taker in repetitive manufacturing to a value-add niche supplier to more industries. This has transformed the business and our long-term outlook. ICN has been a valued partner along the way’, said David.
ICN is Australia and New Zealand’s innovative industry matchmaker. If you’re a major project developer, ICN can put you in contact with the best suppliers. If you’re a supplier we will connect you with the best projects for your business.
