Showcase Company - MEC NT

MEC NT (Molloy Electrical Contracting Pty Ltd) was established in 2009, servicing the Darwin and Greater Regions. Director Sam Molloy commenced the business as a sole trader and employed three or four subcontractors to assist with projects.

Fast forward to today, MEC NT employs over 25 tradesmen, apprentices and administration staff in both Darwin and Katherine. Projects undertaken have developed from domestic electrical and remote housing fit-outs to HV/LV installations, tower lighting, security infrastructure and overhead line construction in Defence, Mining and Government sectors.

MEC NT has completed the works for over 2000 housing refurbishments, 150 residential new builds and numerous industrial, commercial, Government and private electrical projects. Many of these works have been with some of Australia’s leading contractors such as Lendlease, Barpa, ICON, Honeywell, Sunbuild, Goodline, South 32 and Sitzler.

Employees are offered opportunities to upskill and this has paved the way for MEC NT to undertake some ‘out-of-the-norm’ electrical projects. These include HV underground and overhead installations at Darwin International Airport, electrical undergrounds, communication systems & radar towers at the Katherine RAAF Base R8000, new Air Combat Facility at Tindal and the recent Stokes Hill Wharf HV Feeder Replacement.

For the Stokes Hill Wharf HV Feeder Replacement project MEC NT opted to replace the HV cable using a barge on the water, instead of using scaffolding. The use of a barge meant work could only be completed while tides were favourable, but MEC NT completed the project on time and with significant cost savings for the client.

MEC NT has a multifaceted approach to local community involvement and believes it is essential to use local resources and give back to Territorians where possible. All supplies are purchased from local suppliers, local subcontractors are utilised, and employees are NT residents. Each year MEC NT commits to employing a trainee or apprentice and currently has five apprentices on board.
