Formed in 2010, Global Resource Support is small family-owned business that counts some big clients on its impressive resume.
The Perth-based company provides labour and equipment as well as overall project management for the likes of BHP, Rio Tinto, Oz Minerals and Mineral Resources as well as smaller businesses in the mining and construction industries.
According to Senior Project Administrator Kristal Donaldson, it’s the relationships the company and its people have built that have greatly contributed to its success, with Managing Director Jim Martin well connected in the industry.
“We like to think our culture is the reason we get the jobs. The people we are providing and the way we operate our business and our team,” Kristal said
“Our main goal is to work with the client to get the best outcome for them as well as for us.”
Global Resource Support recently completed the headframe erection at South Australia’s Prominent Hill mine. This was one of the biggest projects the company had ever worked on and it’s all thanks to ICN.
The headframe built at Prominent Hill was the second model of the headframe built in the world. The first headframe was completed by Jim Martin and his crew for Newcrest Gold Mine in 2003 and now Global resource support has completed the second headframe in SA.
It won the project through ICN Gateway in 2021 and was engaged in 2022 to do early works and continue to meet with the client. From there, it won the Stage 2 contract and began engaging personnel and mobilising to the site.
“We recruited a lot of people. We were interviewing, we were organising equipment and documentation, and also coordinating the flights and the travel, because we had people traveling all over from Australia,” Kristal said.
“This job was very, very high risk. It was working at heights, and it had one of the biggest cranes in Australia. We had to be quite picky with who we were recruiting. We did face challenges onsite, we struggled with the weather and wind which affected our critical lifts and daily planning therefore we were constantly monitoring each day to achieve our major lifts.
“We recruited for QA managers as well as superintendent supervisors, crane operators, riggers, mechanical fitters. We pretty much had everything and everyone on that job.”
In the end, Global Resource Support recruited more than 50 people on that project.
In 2023 it completed the final stages of the successful project and demobilised. There is still a small crew on site for day-to-day works.
“We kept a good working relationship with Oz Minerals and BHP,” Kristal said.
“We really showed as a small company what we are capable of.”
Global Resource Support has tendered for other work at Prominent Hill and is waiting on outcomes.
Not only has the company-built relationships with major project owners through that project, they now also have a group of talented labour recruitment staff still keen to work with them.
“The guys we had on the headframe really wanted to stick around and keep asking us what is coming up. It’s great to have such a good crew that wants to work with us again.”
