ICN Queensland is working with the Mackay Airport Holding Company to identify local suppliers for a refurbishment of the airport.Mackay Airport is a major regional gateway, with flights to Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Melbourne.
It first opened for commercial aviation in 1930, and nowadays more than 70 flights a week come through the airport. The refurbishments are part of a $900 million redevelopment planned over the next 230 years.
In an article on the airport website, Mackay Airport Head of Operations Adrian Miles said the current upgrades were aimed at improving the customer experience and
enabling efficient operations.
These include expanding the long-term car park with a further 247 bays, bringing it from 368 to 615 ad integrating automatic bag drop stations and self-services kiosks
“Where previously we may have had two counters open for check-in, potentially leading to queues, these upgrades mean there are more available facilities and help
to expedite that overall experience,” Mr Miles said. Airport security has also been overhauled using new CT screening equipment and body scanning technology.“This is proven technology using the most advanced and modern equipment, and it produces better security outcomes for our passengers. For example, the body scanners are preferable for people who have medical implants such as hip or knee replacements. It means they will no longer be required to undergo a full secondary screening process.”
“This technology is the most advanced way to detect items carried on a person.” To find out more, or to register an expression of interest in an open work package, go to the Mackay Airport Refurbishment Gateway page.
