Victorian suppliers have the chance to be involved in the construction, furniture and fittings as well as medical technology for Australia’s first collaborative, hospital-based biomedical engineering research centre.
The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) will be a 12-storey purposed-designed centre at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.
It’s a collaborative initiative between five universities, four research institutions and a tertiary hospital, with links to major international medical technology companies and start-ups.
As part of the Victorian Government’s Local Jobs First policy, ICN Victoria is working with St Vincent’s Hospital to identify local capability.
“The minimum level of local content for this project has been set at 90% for construction and 80% for furniture, fixtures and equipment,” ICN Victorian consultant Andrew Bradley said.
“The purpose-built facility is expected to host collaborative research projects that will deliver better health outcomes preventative health strategies and help reduce the burden of illness in the community.”
The design and construction phase for the new building and basement includes:
- 7 levels of fit out, with education, workspace, research labs, café shell, back-of-house and plant areas, and supporting amenities
- 4 levels of cold shell
- 1 level of roof plant
- 1 level of basement, including plant rooms, and end-of-trip facilities.
In announcing planning approval, the Minister for Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy, Jaala Pulford, said. “We’re bringing together the world’s brightest minds to take on tough healthcare challenges, all the while creating jobs and supporting new scientific breakthroughs.”
Construction is slated to begin in the final quarter of 2022 and take about two years.
St Vincent’s hospital is using ICN Gateway to call for expressions of interest from sub-contractors, manufacturers and product supplies with relevant capability.
