Tiger Tek – Efficient and effective procurement “concierge“

Tiger Tek promotes itself as a concierge to the mining and civil construction industries. And like a concierge at a 5-star hotel can source anything for a guest, Tiger Tek prides itself on being able to source anything for its clients.

“We buy pretty much everything that they need, consolidate it, and send it to them,” Tiger Tek’s William Poedjokerto said.

The small WA-based company supplies several major project owners including Chevron, BHP, Rio Tinto and FMG, as well as state and local government.

Its fully stocked warehouse in Canning Vale, as well as supplier relationships, allows for efficient delivery of everything from consumables like coffee beans and sanitiser, to mining supplies, PPE and plant and equipment.

Tiger Tek noticed a gap in the market because procurement teams struggle to find a single to find a single supplier who can handle all their requirements.

Clients were coming to Tiger Tek to ask them whether they would be able to fulfill a purchase – even something as simple as a Bunnings order when the client did not have its own Bunnings account.

“We procure anything on their behalf,” William said. “Most of them were coming to us because they wanted one-off items at the beginning. Then they might want solar panels, or chainsaws or other adhoc items.”

Tiger Tek will even import some products from overseas, managing everything from procurement to customs clearance, transport and logistics. The company, however, prefers to source Australia-made were possible.

As a result of providing this single point of contact, Tiger Tek grew organically from its inception in 2002.

While it has been operating for more than 20 years, William says the early days were characterised by rejection. But persistence and networking paid off.

As an ICN subscriber, Tiger Tek was able to be introduced to Chevron, BHP and, more recently, the WA Government’s Metronet project. From those contacts, Tiger Tek and its capabilities were exposed to more and more potential clients.

“From time-to-time ICN send a package over and see if I can do it,” William said. “When you submit an EOI, your profile is there so companies can contact you. And then we just follow up.

“We have been around a long time, it’s just that not everyone has heard about Tiger Tek. That is where ICN comes in. ICN has given us more exposure and credibility.”

Indigenous business booming after COVID-forced move

The COVID pandemic was a challenge for many Australian businesses. For some, it meant focusing on a new product or service (hand sanitiser and masks, anyone?), while for others it meant finding Australian supply chains when travel bans hit imports.
