Forging career paths for Aboriginal people

As an Aboriginal owned and operated civil construction business, Birubi is committed to providing employment opportunities to Aboriginal people in rural, regional and metropolitan South Australia.

The company was established by former Rugby League player, Paramatta Eels champion – David Liddiard and former school educator Andrea Harms, who are both passionate about getting young Aboriginal people into secure employment.

“The civil industry is one where the majority of people travel to where the work is being won,” Managing Director Farin Wanganeen said.

“But I think with the indigenous procurement stuff coming along that there will be more opportunities to work across different areas.

“There’s some really big projects planned for the industry in South Australia at the moment – billions of dollars’ worth of work.”

Birubi are working really hard to seize such opportunities and are preparing to scale up as needed.

As a Supply Nation certified company with both ISO and FSC Accreditations and a preferred supplier of several State Government agencies, we have delivered a range of projects including road upgrades, stormwater works, fencing, grading and vegetation clearance works.

Farin’s background in delivering Government projects has given him valuable insight into what is needed to get people work ready – from a “bums-on-seats” position to a career path.

“It’s a lot of work and you have to, as a company, find the money to put that sort of resources into training people who are really green to becoming effective and efficient machine operators or skilled laborers,” he said.

“That’s the pathway that we’re on.”

By taking the time to train and motivate young Aboriginal people, Birubi can make a difference to somebody’s capability and in the longer term, change their financial situation and the lives of their children and their children’s children

While the company has held a variety of certifications over the years, we are particularly proud of its recent Federal Safety Commissioner (FSC) accreditation under the WHS Accreditation Scheme.

To get this accreditation, companies need to have rigorous safety management systems in place and show that these systems are followed and implemented on site.

It also means that the FSC has certified Birubi’s safety management system and that they can now tender for Federal Government projects above $4million.

That is where the company’s ICN subscription will come to the fore.

“Over the last few months, we’ve come to appreciate that ICN is a platform people want to use to engage their contractors. We’re making it known, we want to deliver work across different regions of South Australia and in the metropolitan area. ICN will give us an opportunity to have a look at things that are popping up in those regions,” Farin said.

“ICN will play a crucial role in our business development and growth by making it easier for customers to access our company information and capabilities.”
