Built
Managed by Barwon Health, the new Barwon Women’s and Children’s will integrate with existing University Hospital Geelong services within the University Hospital Geelong precinct. It will provide more:

  • Maternity inpatient beds
  • Paediatric multi-day/same day inpatient beds
  • Birthing suites
  • Operating theatres
  • Expanded paediatric and maternity specialist (outpatient) facilities.

The project will also deliver a new neonatal and parent care unit to ensure families can remain together, with an expansion of the existing special care nursery that provides care for vulnerable and pre-term babies in the first few weeks and months of life.
The project is to be delivered under a Managing Contractor framework with a project value of more than $500 million. Main works construction will commence in late-2024.

Development Victoria
Project 1: Armstrong Creek Sports Centre

This new multi-sport facility will help increase sports participation among the Geelong community supporting local businesses and creating employment opportunities during the project’s delivery.
The schematic design is complete and procurement for a Main Works Contractor is schedule to begin in August 2024.
The new build will include:

  • Four indoor multi-sport courts
  • A civic plaza
  • Site carparking

Project 2: Stead Park
The upgrades will include:

  • An upgraded hockey pitch
  • A new pavilion
  • More seating
  • Procurement for a Main Works Contractor begin in early 2025.

Project 3: Twelve Apostles
Construction of the Twelve Apostles Precinct Redevelopment is expected to start in late 2024.
The redevelopment includes:

  • Visitor Experience Centre building and lookout with full universal access
  • Integrated car and bus parking, including emergency service connectivity
  • Delivery of a high-quality Welcome Garden
  • New road infrastructure and road upgrades
  • Landscaping works to target pathways and road edging.

Once complete the Twelve Apostles Precinct will provide safer and universal access to one of nature’s greatest attractions while protecting the environment and cultural history at this spectacular location.

The Advanced Fibre Cluster is an initiative of a group of highly innovative companies and organisations centred around the Geelong region, accelerating the growth of Australian advanced fibre and composites capabilities. The region is a centre of excellence in advanced fibre and composites manufacturing and innovation.

The Cluster promotes and supports the interests of its members through the facilitation of research and business collaboration, access to opportunities, trade missions and site visits, advocacy, training, and the sharing of management and technical best practice.

Speakers

Sam Majer
Project Manager
Built

Sam has over 10 years’ tier 1 construction industry experience during which has gained extensive health, justice, residential, and hotel expertise. On the BWC project, Sam seeks to leverage his experience gained during his time on the Chisholm Road Prison Managing Contractor project, where he held the role as Project Manager and was responsible for over $400m worth of work. His strong communication and liaison skills make him confident working alongside government, public and trade contractor stakeholders and effective at working with clients, consultants, and user groups alike.
Strong relationships with contractors is also a key factor in his effectiveness and has been brought to bear on a number of high-profile projects where exceptional quality has been delivered resulting in consistently satisfied clients. With qualification in construction management, paired with his practical experience underpin Sam’s astute problem-solving skills around construction are complemented by his technical skills.Sam is a local to the Geelong region and having recently completed the Hanwha H-Ace project at Avalon Airport. Sam has existing relationships with several local contractors and is eager to build on those contacts through the delivery of the new BWC project.

Benjamin Delaney
Senior Project Director

With more than 20 years’ experience in planning and delivering major civic and infrastructure projects, Benjamin has led some of the state’s most significant redevelopments, including the $1B Melbourne Park Redevelopment encompassing the Rod Laver Arena Redevelopment, Centrepiece, and the National Tennis Centre; along with the State Netball and Hockey Centre.  Benjamin’s teams are currently leading the delivery of the Fitzroy Sports Centre, State Basketball Centre Redevelopment, and Regional Sports Infrastructure including three projects in Geelong, amongst other significant sports projects. A trusted advisor to senior levels of Government, Benjamin is a specialist in strategic procurement and collaborative contracting models of delivery.

Paul Daybell
Acting Procurement Coordinator
City of Greater Geelong

Paul Daybell has very recently joined the Greater City of Geelong as a senior officer in the Procurement space. Paul is a well-seasoned procurement specialist with a comprehensive background in both commercial and government sectors, and suitably qualified.
A master in strategic sourcing, supplier relationship management, and category management. He was instrumental in supporting Victorian Government stakeholders with essential service products during the Pandemic and he also he led the engagement team in the largest Change Management project for QLD Government across all departments as the Principal Procurement Officer for Queensland Government Procurement. Now, Paul has procured some extraordinary things over the years, but you must ask him about the Bear Grylls story later.
Paul has a passion in building strong relationships and delivering value-driven outcomes through data-driven analysis and strategic initiatives.
Most importantly, though, Paul is now officially a local, calling our amazing Bellarine Peninsula home for the last 5 years.

David Buchanan
CEO
Advanced Fibre Cluster

David has worked at Senior Levels with international companies for over 30 years including Mitsui and Toyota Tsusho, spending over 14 years as General Manager of Metals operations, working to support Toyota Motor manufacturing in the International and Domestic Steel supply chain.
David is the current CEO of the Australian Steel Association working with state and federal government stakeholders across the import supply chain lobbying for improvements growing member value, increasing stakeholder support from government, banking and increasing member diversification and delivering improved member experience.
The ASA has 60 member companies representing over $5 billion worth of trade. David has recently been appointed to the IRF subcommittee, looking at future improvements of Australia’s anti-dumping system.
In April 2022, David was appointed to the Advanced Fibre Cluster Geelong CEO role, part time, in conjunction with his role at the Australian Steel Association.  David is a passionate advocate for Geelong and the Region.

Robert Gervasoni
Business Development Manager

Robert has been dedicated to providing meaningful employment to people living with disabilities for the past 10 years at genU in the employment space, formerly known as Karingal. During his time there, he has held several key roles:

  1. 4 years as Production Manager
  2. 3 years as Grounds, Landscaping, and Nursery Manager
  3. 3 years as Business Development Manager

Prior to his work at genU, Robert spent 17 years with Spotless Catering in Melbourne, where he honed his skills as a chef. His career highlight was serving as the Executive Chef at the MCG for 7 years, as well as working as the Group Chef for major events such as the Melbourne Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup Carnival, Australian Tennis Open, and various major golf events.
Robert moved from Melbourne 11 years ago and now resides in Torquay, where he loves calling the Southwest region home.
